The National Black Prosecutors Association (NBPA) cordially invites you to participate in their Annual Job Fair on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at the Roosevelt New Orleans, New Orleans, Louisiana.  The goal of the National Black prosecutors Association’s (NBPA) Job Fair is to promote diversity in prosecutors’ offices by providing a forum where law students, recent law graduates, and experienced attorneys from across the nation can meet and interview with prospective prosecutorial employers at the local, state, and federal levels.  To register for the Job Fair, please complete an applicant registration form and submit it along with a resume and a check for the appropriate fee ($25) payable to the NBPA 29^th Annual Conference.  Registration is also available online with a credit card at www.blackprosecutors.org.  More details may be found online at www.blackprosecutors.org as well.  Early registration ends June 8, 2012; after June 8^th, the regular registration fee is $50 for law students.  Registration closes Monday, July 16, 2012.

Description: This seminar focuses on a key stage of the federal criminal justice system: sentencing. The seminar explores the purposes of sentences and also covers guilty pleas and plea bargaining, procedural rights during the sentencing process, different types of sentencing statutes with emphasis on federal sentencing guidelines and the federal death penalty. Other subjects to be studied during the seminar include supervised release and probation and revocation of supervised release and collateral consequences and sanctions. The seminar provides a forum for not only learning the legal rules governing sentencing but for debating the policy questions engendered by this area of the law.
A one or two credit paper (20 or 40 pages) analyzing a particular feature of plea bargaining or sentencing will be required

 To be considered for this award, each applicant must comply with the following requirements: The applicant must graduate during the year of the award for which he or she is applying (i.e., 20011-2012 recipients must be a December 2011, May 2012, June 2012, or August 2012 graduate). The applicant must demonstrate the procurement of employment in public interest law, an area that includes but is not limited to legal assistance groups, public defender offices, special interest and minority group advocates, and civil liberties unions. The applicant’s starting and projected annual salary derived from the employment described above must be less than 125% of the standard maintenance allowance (“SMA”) that is set each year by the U.S. Department of Labor. For the 2011 year, 125% of the “non high cost area” SMA is $46,760 and $53,882 for large “high cost” metropolitan areas. The applicant must demonstrate the existence of more than $5,000 of outstanding debts, which have been incurred in the form of loans, used to finance his or her legal education.  To be eligible for the Public Interest Law Foundation Grant, a student must have accumulated substantial indebtedness from student loans and must demonstrate a commitment to pursuing public interest legal work.  An applicant must have graduated in December 2011, or will graduate in May, June, or August 2012.

 For purposes of this grant, “public interest legal work” means work for an employer that pays a low starting salary and that is either an Internal Revenue Code § 501(c)(3) entity or an agency of government. Deadline is May 23, 2012. law-financialaidmail@uiowa.edu

2012-2013 National Leadership Opportunities

Delegates to the ABA House of Delegates
The Law Student Division elects three Delegates to the ABA House of Delegates (the ABA’s governing body) to serve a one-year term. In short, these delegates are responsibile for:

Representing  the Division in the ABA House of Delegates and advocating Division  positions to other ABA entities;

• Working  for ABA House of Delegates adoption of Division resolutions, co-sponsored  resolutions, and resolutions directly affecting law students and legal  education filed with the House;
• Serving  as the primary contact and coordinators to the 65+ Law Student Division  liaisons to other ABA entities; and
• Working  with Division and other ABA leaders to promote, advocate and lobby for law  student and legal education legislation.

Vice Chair-Student Bar Associations
Student Bar Associations are an essential link between the Division and law students around the country. SBA Presidents bring the concerns and issues of their students to a regional and national level. The Vice Chair-SBA serves as the voice and representative of SBAs on a national level. Serving a one-year term, the Vice Chair-SBA is responsible for:
:Strengthening relationships between the SBA and ABA organizations at local, regional,  and national levels;

• Facilitating  discussions with SBA Presidents regarding issues of concern to law  schools, law students, and legal education; Representing  the interests of student bar associations and assisting these organization  leaders in drafting/filing policy recommendations on behalf of SBA  Presidents; and Maintaining  and developing resources and materials for the Division’s SBA webpage,  handbook, conferences and law school chapters.

Early-Bird Registration Deadline: May 31, 2012

The ABA Annual Meeting is just around the corner. The early-bird registration of $50 ($75 for ABA non-member law students and includes a one-year membership in the ABA Law Student Division) will end on May 31. Beginning June 1, the student rate will increase to $75 ($100 for ABA non-member law students). Be sure to register for the Annual Meeting at the early-bird rate. Remember, your registration fee includes an “all access to CLE” student badge giving you complimentary access to most educational events sponsored by the ABA’s various practice specific entities.
