ABA Resume Building Opportunity for Law Students

The ABA Law Student Division offers unique opportunities for law students to serve as leaders in the ABA while they are still in law school. These positions provide excellent resume-builders for students who receive hands-on experience working with practicing attorneys, as well a recognition of your law school’s ability to produce quality leaders entering the legal profession.

We respectfully ask that you please take a few moments to distribute the email below to the law students at your school. We also ask your assistance in seeking out students at your law school who have demonstrated a talent for leadership and encourage them to submit their nomination for Division office. On a related note, the ABA Annual Meeting will take place August 8-12, 2013 in San Francisco, California. ABA Law Student Division 2013-2014 National Leadership Opportunities

Submit Your Nomination for Division Delegate to the ABA House of Delegates or Vice Chair-SBA

Delegates to the ABA House of Delegates

The Law Student Division elects three Delegates to the ABA House of Delegates (the ABA’s governing body) to serve a one-year term. In short, these delegates are responsible for:

Representing the Division in the ABA House of Delegates and advocating Division positions to other ABA entities;

Advocating ABA House of Delegates adoption of Division resolutions, co-sponsored resolutions, and resolutions directly affecting law students and legal education;

Serving as the primary contact and coordinators to the 65+ Law Student Division liaisons to other ABA entities; and

Working with Division and other ABA leaders to promote, advocate and lobby for law student and legal education legislation.

Vice Chair-Student Bar Associations

Student Bar Associations serve as an essential link between the Division and law students around the country. SBA Presidents bring the concerns and issues of their students from a regional level to the ABA national level. The Vice Chair-SBA serves as the voice and representative of SBAs on a national level. Serving a one-year term, the Vice Chair-SBA is responsible for:

Strengthening relationships between Student Bar Associations and the ABA

Facilitating discussions on legal education, law school, and law student issues among SBA Presidents
Representing the interests of student bar associations and assisting these organization leaders in drafting/filing policy recommendations; and

Maintaining and developing resources and materials for the Division’s SBA webpage, handbook, conferences and law school chapters.

Early-Bird Registration Deadline: May 31, 2013

The ABA Annual Meeting is just around the corner. The early-bird registration of $50 ($75 for ABA non-member law students and includes a one-year membership in the ABA Law Student Division) will end on May 31. Beginning June 1, the student rate will increase to $75 ($100 for ABA non-member law students). Be sure to register for the Annual Meeting at the early-bird rate. Remember, your registration fee includes an “all access to CLE” student badge giving you complimentary access to most educational events sponsored by the ABA’s various practice specific entities.

The Law Library now has access to new HeinOnline collections: State Statutes: A Historical Archive, Revised Statutes of Canada, and Early American Case Law.

State Statutes: A Historical Archive (HeinOnline) http://proxy.lib.uiowa.edu/login?url=http://heinonline.org/HOL/Index?collection=sstatutes

This collection includes historical superseded state statutes for all fifty states. Coverage varies depending on jurisdiction, but dates as far back as 1717. This collection does not include current state statutes.

The Revised Statutes of Canada provide complete coverage of the six revisions (1886, 1906, 1927, 1952, 1970, and 1985) of the federal laws of Canada passed by the Canadian Parliament, from the first revision in 1886 to the last in 1985. This set is the consolidation of the Statutes of Canada incorporating amendments and Acts that have been added since the last revision. Canadian laws passed since the last revision through 2011 are available in the Session Laws Library on HeinOnline.

This historical collection provides full-text searching of federal and state case law from the 1800s. The 30 volume set Federal Cases Comprising Cases Argued and Determined in the Circuit and District Courts of the United States from the Earliest Times to the Beginning of the Federal Reporter, Arranged Alphabetically by the Titles of the Cases, and Numbered Consecutively is fully searchable and indexed, as well as Abbott’s National Digest: A Digest of the Reports of the United States Courts. Historical state case reporters include: American Decisions, American Reports, and American State Reports providing coverage from 1760 through 1911, and several more.

L3 2011-2012 PUBLIC INTEREST LAW FOUNDATION GRANT

Up to twenty thousand dollars in grants will be available to be awarded to Iowa Law School seniors (from three to five students) to facilitate their engaging in public interest legal work. The funds for these grants have been made available from private donations through the Iowa Law School Foundation. To be eligible for the Public Interest Law Foundation Grant, a student must have accumulated substantial indebtedness from student loans and must demonstrate a commitment to pursuing public interest legal work. An applicant must have graduated in December 2012, or will graduate in May, June, or August 2013. For purposes of this grant, “public interest legal
work” means work for an employer that pays a low starting salary and that is either an Internal Revenue Code § 501(c)(3) entity or an agency of government. Deadline is May 31, 2013. law-financialaidmail@uiowa.edu

L3 2012-2013 PUBLIC INTEREST LAW AWARD

The Iowa Law School Classes of 1987 and 1988 established the Public Interest Law Award to honor and support Iowa Law School graduates who choose to enter the field of public interest law. The award provides annual grants of $500 or more, which will be used to reduce student loans that recipients of the award, have accumulated during their legal education. To be considered for this award, each applicant must comply with the following requirements: The applicant must graduate during the year of the award for which he or she is applying (i.e., 20011-2012 recipients must be a December 2012, May 2013, June 2013, or August 2013 graduate). The applicant must demonstrate the procurement of employment in public interest law, an area that includes but is not limited to legal assistance groups, public defender offices, special interest and minority group advocates, and civil liberties unions. The applicant’s starting and projected annual salary derived from the employment described above must be less than 125% of the standard maintenance allowance (“SMA”) that is set each year by the U.S. Department of Labor. For the 2013 year, 125% of the “non high cost area” SMA is $48,387 and $55,758 for large “high cost” metropolitan areas. The applicant must demonstrate the existence of more than $5,000 of outstanding debts, which have been incurred in the form of loans, used to finance his or her legal education. Invitation to Dillon Inn of Court – May 15

The Dillon Inn of Court invites UI law students to attend its Spring 2013 meetings. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday evening, May 15, and will be held in Davenport. The Dillon Inn is a member of the American Inns of Court, which promotes professional development and networking among the bar and bench. The May meeting format will consist of a social hour and dinner. This is a great opportunity to meet judges and lawyers from the Iowa-Illinois Quad Cities and Iowa’s Seventh Judicial District. A limited number of slots are available for this meeting. Interested students should contact Brian Farrell no later than May 10, 2013, at brian-r-farrell@uiowa.edu.

Please donate your used textbooks to EJF. Each year, the proceeds from the book sales go to law students who are volunteering in the public sector. There will be a box for donations in the lobby throughout finals.
